Our History

Scripted by Prof. Egwu U. Egwu: Ph.D

The Beginning

PRESCO was originally a boys Boarding Secondary School established by the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria (formerly Church of Scotland Mission) in 1962, at Abakaliki, now capital of Ebonyi state. Modeled after the famous Hope Waddel Training Institute established in Calabar in 1895, it was designed to be a top-notch institution.

In 1960, Rev. William Masterton Aitken, M.A Cantab; a senior teacher at the Hope Waddell Institute and an ordained Reverend Minister, was asked to proceed to Abakaliki to establish a Boys Secondary School (PRESCO) in 1961. A piece of land was quickly acquired from the Mgbabo community. The first 60 boys were admitted in January, 1962. These were the PIONEERS.

Academics & School Life

PRESCO was established as an elitist, middle Class school for boys. The school excelled in soccer and drama throughout the province and Eastern Region. Students learnt the meaning of discipline; waking up very early for cross country runs. The facilities were first class and the academic standards were very high.

The Biafran War & Resilience

The School went on an impromptu recess in July 1967 due to the Biafran War. It continued in the Old Campus till 1999 when the Ebonyi State Government created the State University and took over the Old Site. PRESCO today is the "Triumph of Success over Tragedy," continuing to churn out thousands of hot brains.
